A kind correspondent has pointed out to me that the very pulpit from which John Keble preached has long ago been superseded, and that the preacher at the University Eucharist is chosen by a committee chaired by the Vice-Chancellor (currently one Louise Richardson).
For all I know, in these inclusive days, the Vice-Chancellor may herself be a Muslim. But this fact, I suppose, does – to an extent – let Dr Lamb off the hook. Especially, of course, if he is also of the Mohammedan persuasion.
