As a result of recent newspaper reports, Ignatius has been receiving urgent enquiries from confused Catholics. ‘Is abortion no longer a sin?’ asks one. ‘Is Francis now a gay lib-er?’ asks another. ‘Will everything get back to normal after the Year of Mercy?’ asks a third.
In order to set minds at rest, we asked Vatican spokesperson Cardinal Luciano Pavarotti whether Pope Francis has made changes to Catholic moral theology; whether the Year of Mercy is a year of indulgence; and what to expect from the October Synod.
‘It is with the utmost pastoral sensitivity,’ writes Pavarotti, ‘that I am obliged to respond to your questions with truthful brevity: No, No and Nothing.’
(Though something probably got lost in the translation.)
